Senioritis

Remember back in high school when you suffered a case of senioritis?  I certainly do.  As the youngest of three kids, my parents definitely were more lax with me than they were with my sisters.  I skipped school so many times that on student teacher exchange day (where you swap places with a teacher), I swapped with the attendance lady so I could erase some of my absences.  I’m not kidding.  I think I had like 19.  If you had 9 or more they could legally flunk you.

I also mastered the art of my mom’s signature.  Fran D. Carona.  I’m sure she became suspicious when she opened a drawer of mine and saw her name scribbled a jillion times.  But, I think the real kicker was when the school called to verify my “dentist” appointment that day.  She backed me 100%.  The beauty of being the baby of the family.

Do you remember earlier this year when I announced my return to college?  I was so excited.  So nervous.  So naive.  Fast forward 5 months and I am exhausted.  I am seriously suffering of a case of senioritis.  (I’m really not a senior yet, but since I’ve already graduated once let’s just call it that!)  Last week when the storms were rolling in I honestly thought about putting my clothes on inside out in hopes that school would be cancelled.  I felt like a kid in a candy shop when not only was school cancelled, but I was released from jury duty.  This Mama was doing the happy dance.

I think we all need summer at this house.  The kids are tired.  I am tired.  My mind is tired- tired of thinking.  Truly.  Today I spent so much time doing homework and on the computer that I thought, “what in the world am I doing to myself?  This is so unnecessary.”

The long days of summer and vacations with family will serve to rejuvenate us all.  Our schedules won’t be as busy and programmed.  We will all tend to stay up later and sleep a little longer.  And, alas, in August, the lure of new school supplies will suck us back in and we will be excited for another spin on the merry-go-round.
